Support Schools and Skills: Strengthening Employment and Training Opportunities

I am working to support our schools and enhance education and training opportunities by bringing schools, colleges and businesses together across Runnymede and Weybridge.

Every child deserves a great education, from nursery to university. We have amazing nurseries, schools and colleges, and our fantastic University in Runnymede and Weybridge, all working hard every day to create and deliver the best outcomes. Not just in their academic learning, but also in developing practical skills and the social and emotional awareness and resilience to be happy and confident. These are the tools we need to succeed, but I believe our children can also benefit from a greater understanding of the world of work and the opportunities that await them when they leave education.

The best opportunities often come when you bring people together. So in addition to working closely with our schools to support them, I am also working to bring them together with local businesses to offer practical advice, training and experience. Both schools and businesses tell me of the benefits this brings, giving students invaluable contacts and insight into future training and employment opportunities.

I regularly meet with our schools and businesses to promote this work, and next year I will be organising our first business fair. If you know any business interested in joining this initiative please do contact me at ben.spencer.mp@parliament.uk

Through this work I will:

  • Engage with our nurseries, schools, colleges and university, supporting them to deliver high quality education

  • Advocate on their behalf to the Department for Education, Ofsted, Ofqual and any other relevant body

  • Work with Surrey County Council as our Local Education Authority and other community organisations to ensure co-ordinated support for our schools

  • Support Further Education and the importance of vocational qualifications and apprenticeships

  • Encourage local businesses to provide support and advice to local schools and colleges

  • Encourage opportunities for enrichment and engagement
