All residents will know that, while Runnymede and Weybridge benefit from great transport links, one of the consequences is higher levels of air pollution.

As part of my work to encourage greater measures to tackle air pollution, this week I have responded to the important consultation on the proposed timetable to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2030 with transition to full zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) sales by 2035.The Government’s proposed policy will have the dual benefits of improving air quality and associated health outcomes, and boosting economic growth through the expansion of the UK’s ZEV car manufacturing sector.

This policy is of international and national importance, but also has specific ramifications for Runnymede and Weybridge. I am proud that we are home to a range of high-tech companies including Octopus EV and several Tesla sites. Tackling air pollution is also very important for the constituency.  Both the M3 and M25 run through Runnymede and Weybridge, and Surrey County Council has stated that road usage in Surrey is 66% above the national average. Local NHS services see the negative impact this has on the health of my constituents.

One of the best ways to tackle air pollution and improve health outcomes is by reducing the use of petrol and diesel vehicles through increased ZEV ownership. My response builds on the work I have been doing with National Highways, Surrey County Council, transport providers and Government colleagues to deliver improvements to reduce both noise and air pollution.

I welcome specific measures, such as incentivisation of car clubs, which will have the important ancillary benefits of helping to reduce traffic and parking congestion within the constituency. I strongly support the steps Government is taking to build the infrastructure necessary for ZEV. I have also called on the Government to incentivise manufacturers to offer scrappage schemes, where drivers can part exchange older, polluting vehicles for a ZEV or significant zero emissions capability vehicles in order to get the dirtiest vehicles off our roads as quickly as possible.

Reduce air and noise pollution

Air quality maps show that, in Runnymede and Weybridge, the largest impact we face is from our motorways and major A roads. Residents also know there is almost no part of the constituency that is not affected by motorway noise.

Did you know that UK nationals living abroad can vote in UK elections?

Wednesday, 3 December, 2025
In January 2024 new laws came into force meaning all British citizens living abroad are eligible to vote in UK parliamentary elections, and also have the right to engage with and seek support from the MP of their last permanent UK address.
