Last week I submitted my response to the Department for Transport’s consultation on the developing the UK’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandate.
Since campaigning for greater support for the sector throughout the pandemic, I have also been backing efforts to ensure a prosperous and sustainable aviation industry in the UK. Developing sustainable fuels is an essential part of this.
With our close proximity to Heathrow, leading the way on research and innovation in this area will have a real impact on our local as well as national economy. During my visit Heathrow last year, I was able to discuss the key challenges facing the aviation sector, including decarbonisation. I have been a strong supporter of the development of our SAF industry as a key way of meeting the Government’s commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
I therefore welcome the Government’s consultation on the proposed timetable towards the implementation of a sustainable fuels mandate. This commitment will mean that industry is more able to secure the investment and infrastructure needed to grow our SAF industry at pace. This presents an important opportunity to reduce emissions and strengthen our energy security, while providing economic benefits.
In my response I have also highlighted the importance of international cooperation which will be necessary to support the use of SAF across the aviation industry, and set out my views on the proposed framework, limits and targets to be brought in as part of the new regulatory framework. This includes ensuring sustainable fuels not only produce fewer emissions, but are also sustainably sourced and do not negatively impact work to decarbonise other sectors, including road transport.
